We love it when new members join MixR, we get super excited when we see a new group being formed. Most of all, we absolutely love seeing MixR in action, bringing people together, empowering new female leaders, and creating change in our world!

On Saturday September 8th, the #PavementPounders group on MixR will be taking a charter bus down to Orange County to canvass for Democratic candidate Mike Levin, thanks to a very special activist: Jane Fonda.

How did this come about, you might ask?

Well, it all started out with a group of women, an idea, and a platform. Understanding the need to involve as many as possible in the political process, the women decided that they were going to canvass on behalf of certain candidates in order to try to change the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives. Specifically, here in Southern California, there are five districts (in San Diego, Los Angeles, Ventura and Orange Counties) that present the strongest opportunities, and these are the districts that the #PavementPounders are targeting.

The group decided to collect all their contacts, band together, and create a group on MixR to show how easy it is to start a grassroots gathering of activism and action. As #PavementPounders was coming together and starting to grow, one of the members reached out to Jane Fonda, whom she had met on a recent canvassing trip. She asked Ms. Fonda if she would speak at a workshop she was organizing to get more individuals engaged in her grassroots activism. A lifelong activist herself, Jane Fonda agreed, and the event was held on July 22nd at a private home.

During a highly articulate and moving speech, Ms. Fonda stressed how absolutely critical person-to-person contact is when it comes to political engagement, empowerment, and action. She also asked the #PavementPounders help her pull together people to canvass for candidate Mike Levin (49th District) on September 8th. They agreed (of course) and are thrilled to have such a powerful – and empowered – voice taking a stand for social action and women’s empowerment.
